Jeff Gittus Memorial Wrap!

By Lewis Hamersley

The biggest sidecar meeting of the season has come and gone, and what a meeting it was! Here’s the wrap on the Jeff Gittus Memorial from Make Smoking History Pinjar Park Speedway.

Russell Mitchell and Andy Gajek completed a sensational sidecar double, as they added to their state championship this season with victory in the Jeff Gittus Memorial. It was a two horse race in the 6 lap final, with last year’s event winners Scott Charsley and Matt Reese excluded for touching the tapes at the start of the final. Charsley and Reese qualified automatically for the final after topping the scoreboard at the end of the heats where they went unbeaten.

Eventual winners Mitchell and Gajek only dropped one point in the heats which was to Charsley and Reese in the 2nd heat of the night, before winning their semifinal on route to the final. Finishing in 2nd place in the final was one of several family duos in the meeting, the father and son combination of Jeff and Daniel Bishop. The Bishops won the other semifinal after picking up 3 consecutive heat wins. Visiting from South Australia, brother and sister Aaron and Teagan Hartwig started their night off with a win before finishing in 2nd place in their remaining 3 heat races. 2nd place would also be where they finished in their semifinal, meaning they did not progress to the final. Only the top scorers in the heats and the semifinal winners made it to the final, and the Hartwigs were very close to getting to the final in their first meeting at Pinjar Park.

A surprise casualty from the heats was the team of Tony Shield and step son Ash Brown, who didn’t make it to the semifinals in a super lineup of sidecars. They were the unlucky team not to make it to the semifinals, losing out on countback to the teams of Josh Wells and Corey Blackman, and Clayton Mills and Jessie Thomas. All three teams had scored 7 points from their 4 heat races. Wells and Blackman finished 2nd in their semifinal, while Mills and Thomas finished 3rd in theirs. The other team to make the semifinals was brothers Ben and Jamie Thompson, who finished 3rd in their semifinal after scoring 9 heat points. Rocky Bryan and Matt Young scored 6 points in the heats, coming very close to qualifying for the semifinals. Horrie Payne and Clinton Holmwood notched up 5 points, also coming close. Ricky Wright and Steve McQueen scored 4 points from their first 2 rides, with an exclusion for going on the infield in their 3rd ride, due to McQueen picking up an injury. Hopefully McQueen can recover quickly and hop back on a sidecar again this season. Paul Clarke and Dave Mercer scored 3 points, having twice been excluded for going on the infield. Reserve pairing of current WA solo champion Cameron Heeps and fellow solo rider Jason Bishop scored 1 point in their only outing of the night on a sidecar, and they looked every bit as good as the rest of the riders.

Speaking of Cameron Heeps, the 2017 Ipswich Witches rider won the night’s 500cc solo racing. Heeps was first out of the gate and never looked back as he took a dominant victory ahead of Daniel Winchester and Kale Ballantyne who were in a race for 2nd place. Heeps dropped a solitary point all night which came at the hands of Winchester, who won all four of his heat races. Winchester had to work hard to keep a perfect record in the heats as he was very nearly beaten by Heeps the Ziedas brothers, Kobee and Jarryd. Kobee Ziedas won the B final to join the top 3 heat scorers in the final, where he finished 4th. Ziedas had his best meeting yet on a 500cc solo as he continues to impress and show that he’s a star of the future. 3rd placed finisher Kale Ballantyne was again in fine form, only dropped 2 points in his heats. Doug Scoble finished 3rd in the B final, with 7 points to his name from the heats. Joey Furfaro and Matt Marson picked up 6 points apiece, with both also appearing in the B final. Jason Bishop, Carley Gittus, Leigh Boujos and Jarryd Ziedas all scored 3 points in a very even field of solos. Jarryd Ziedas had a tough crash in his final heat ride, but managed to get back on the bike and finish in the rerun.

The two junior sidecar teams were out for more races, with four heats coming before a final. Both teams yet again were superb and put on some of the best racing of the night. Jake Harvey and Tyler Solomon emerged as the winners at the end of the night ahead of the Fewster brothers, Jack and Adam. The Fewster’s took out the first of five races between the two teams, before Harvey and Solomon rebounded to win the next four, including the final.

Former WA 125cc champion Declan Killeen won the 125cc final. Killeen beat Brad Gordon and Chris Bogdan in a hotly contested final. Luke Killeen, younger brother of Declan, also took his place in the final after a good run in the heats with 8 points, got out of shape before Brad Gordon unfortunately couldn’t avoid him and crashed into him. Luke Killeen was taken off the track in a stretcher. We wish him all the very best for a speedy recovery. Brad Gordon won his first heat race before taking 2nd place in the rest of his heats and the final, as he warms up for next weekend’s under 16 national championships in Kurri Kurri over in NSW. Good luck Brad, bring it home for WA. Chris Bogdan finished the night in 3rd place, having finished in each of the 4 possible finishing positions in his 4 heat races. Jack McDiarmid had a good night with 7 points from his heat races as he continues to shake up the 125cc division more and more each time he races. Mitchell McDiarmid, younger brother of Jack, and Xander Smith were both promoted from the pre-program’s 125cc Lites racing into the main program with the 125cc’s and both riders did very well. Mitchell McDiarmid scored 6 points including a win over older brother Jack. Xander Smith scored a respectable 2 points.

Thanks to Eurocars for sponsoring the Jeff Gittus Memorial. The next meeting on the calendar is the Gordon Rowland Memorial meeting for the 125cc junior solos on February 4. The junior solo division at Pinjar Park is always incredibly exciting and the Gordon Rowland Memorial will continue that trend. Get up to Pinjar Park for this meeting and bring a friend with you for a great night out.
