125cc and U21 500cc WA State Title Wrap 2016

By Lewis Hamersley and Andrea Killeen

November 26th at Make Smoking History Pinjar Park Speedway was the first state title night of the season. Expectations were high and the racing certainly did not disappoint.

In the first of two state championships on the line, a new champion was crowned as visiting Queensland rider Keynan Rew took out the WA under 16 125cc state title without dropping a point all night. On his second visit to Pinjar Park, Rew raced to four wins out of four in his heat races before crossing the finish line in first place ahead of Brad Gordon in 2nd place and Luke Killeen in 3rd place. Gordon gave it his all but was unable to beat the Queenslander. Keynan Rew was one of a trio of Queensland riders who made the trip west for the night’s junior solo state title. Bailey Viner and Cordell Rogerson joined Rew in making the trip over from Queensland. Viner finished fourth on his first time at the track and Rogerson will be disappointed not to have made the final after scoring an impressive 7 points in his heat rides.

2015 champion Declan Killeen was unlucky to miss out on a place in the final having scored 8 points in the heats, including a costly exclusion in his first ride. Killeen went down but thankfully he was ok and managed to get up and keep racing. Christopher Bogdan had a strong night with 7 points. Jack Mcdiarmid and Jayden King raced well on their way to 3 points each. Ryan Philippson and Cuan Shirley had steady nights and were on the pace with the rest of the field.

Four 500cc riders took part in racing separate to the 500cc U21 state title. The returning Cameron Heeps won all four of his rides to remind the spectators of just how quick he is around the tiny Pinjar circuit. Brady Webb was also back in action and looked like he’d never been away with a 2nd place in each of his rides. Carley Gittus raced to 3rd place in all four of her races with a good showing. Jason Bishop was unable to pick up any points however he came very close to doing so. Bishop hasn’t been on a solo for very long but he showed good signs and could be one to watch in the coming years.

Blake Russell won his 2nd consecutive WA U21 500cc state championship. Russell managed to hold off the hard charging Jack Smith to retain his title. 2017 Glasgow Tigers signing Smith, fresh from a superb first full season in British league speedway with Birmingham, beat eventual winner Russell in his opening heat and looked quick all night. Unfortunately for Smith he couldn’t get the win when it mattered most as Russell made a great start from the inside gate and held on for all four laps to take victory for the second year running. Matt Marson completed the rostrum with his best meeting on a 500cc bike since stepping up from a 250cc machine. Marson scored 7 points in his heat races including a win in his 2nd ride. Kobee Ziedas finished fourth and wasn’t far away from a place on the podium. Jarryd Ziedas and Joey Furfaro 3 points between them.

The junior sidecars continued to put on some of the best racing at the venue. Jack and Adam Fewster won the night’s racing in an incredible final where any of the three junior sidecar outfits could’ve won. Jake Harvey and his passenger Tyler Solomon crossed the line in 2nd place, with Scott Topping and Morgan Cornwell in 3rd place. All three pairings were as quick as each other throughout the night and that showed in the final which could’ve been the best junior sidecar race of the season. Jake Harvey and Tyler Solomon won two of the four heat races, with the Fewster brothers winning the other two.

Russell Mitchell continued his great form with a stunning victory in the sidecar division. Mitchell, with passenger Andy Gajek, started the four sidecar final from a 30 metre handicap but still managed to get the better of Scott Charsley and Matt Reece, and the duo of Tony Shield and Ash Brown. Clayton Mills and Steve McQueen finished fourth in the final. Mitchell and Gajek didn’t drop a single point in their heats and they kept their momentum going in the final. Charsley and Reece notched up two heat wins but were unable to beat the dynamic Mitchell and Gajek. Rocky Bryan and Broden Johnson picked up a solid win in their first outing of the season. The ever present Horrie Payne and Chromie Hollywood were among the points in a very good lineup of sidecars.

The preprogram events featuring the peewees and 125cc support are really picking up the pace. Hayley continues to improve her lap times and Xander had a full night on the bike whilst Mitchell flies out the tapes. Darcy Timmins was winning several of her heats in the peewees, the Harvey brothers rivalry heats up on the track with Locky leading the pace. Axle, Zachary, Callum, Zac, Ryder and Zachary put on great show getting amongst the action.
Results for the night are further down the page.

The next main event will be the Sidecar WA State Titles and Round 1 of the 500cc State Title – hosted by Quit Collie Speedway.

Safety Fence News

It has happened, the committee have instructed the Treasury team of Mike and Sarah to order the Air Safety Fence! We anticipate the fence to arrive here in Perth around March. It is manufactured in the UK and shipped over, and, with the British racing season over, we have to join the queue as they update their fences in their off season. The Club has a sponsorship package – your business on a panel for 3 years with three years of Double Season Passes, payment options available!
In the meantime, the construction of the fence continues – the plywood for the straights has been ordered as well as the mesh for the corners. Shieldzy has been working on the poles, tagging them to attach materials to.

Track Surface

The Clay and metal dust is starting to arrive for the final layer, there is a bit of mixing to do so keep an eye out for busy bees for the work to be done!
